Hardwareįor the last few months, some of our printers would have wingding font printed to our printers across the network. However this is NOT my preferred method to restore a database. I have 'restored' SQL databases that were backed up using Datto and they do seem to be operational even though the restore method involves taking the SQL database offline and then copying the MDF/LDF files from the Datto backup to the SQL database file location (over-writing the existing database MDF/LDF files) and then bringing the database back online. Use a proper backup system that is FULLY SQL aware. I hope I explained this properly? Datto tech support will not tell you this information (I have tried many times) I found out the hard way. This is the same method that your Epicor vendor suggests to use, and I agree. Then use Datto to backup that separate drive with its SQL BAK files. Use SQL to perform the SQL full backups and transaction log backups and place those backup BAK files on a SEPARATE drive than where SQL databases are located. If you still need to use Datto to backup SQL full recovery model databases, do it indirectly. So in short, do NOT use Datto backups on the drives where your SQL full recovery model databases are located. Otherwise Datto will set the SQL full backup flag, and now your database backup history continuity is BROKEN. So if one then decides to use SQL instead of Datto for SQL backups (using a proper full backup along with transaction logs), you CANNOT have Datto take an image backup of the drive where the database files are located. It will simply set the backup flag as if it were a simple recovery model database. Now problems will occur if the SQL database is using the full recovery model Datto is not really designed to do proper full backups along with transaction log backups since it doesn't know how to do transaction log backups (from what I see). This works for most people as long as they stick with SQL simple recovery models for their databases. SQL backup history will show that it was backed up by an external device. If one uses Datto to backup a drive that has SQL databases on it using the simple recovery model, it is basically SQL aware and will set the SQL backup flag for those databases on that drive. They are primarily an 'image' type of backup meant for disaster recovery, not a 'file' type of backup. Right now, the database is backed up during the maintenance plan once a night a 9pm, so I only always have just the 1 point during the day to ever restore from. If I did backup the database partition as part of the backup periodically throughout the day, does that mess up people who are accessing the database live? From a business continuity perspective that seems wrong. If for some reason I ever need to boot that image off of the Datto appliance, it wouldn't have the database partition intact. Question is, what is the downside or adverse affect of backing up the database partition as well that way everything is part of the BCDR image. Instead, they recommended backing up the database backup partition where backups from a maintenance plan reside. When talking with the Epicor vendor, who also installed SQL on the server along with Epicor, they advised against backing up the database partition when the Datto appliance ran it's backup of the server. Client also uses a Datto backup appliance for BCDR. I've recently built out a SQL Server VM running Epicor 10 ERP software.
